Shagang School of Iron and Steel is featured by metallurgy and metal materials, and committed to training multidisciplinary talents with modern engineering awareness and innovative capabilities. The school currently has two undergraduate majors of metallurgical engineering and metal materials engineering. There are four master's degree authorization directions in metallurgical engineering, materials metallurgy, materials and chemical engineering, resources and environment, and one doctoral degree authorization in materials metallurgy. It has established a complete talent training system integrating undergraduate, master and doctoral degree, with more than 600 students in the school. In 2016, the school was awarded the title of Advanced Collective of Educators in Jiangsu Province.
There are sixty-three faculty members currently in Shagang School of Iron and Steel, including a professor of China’s Thousand Talents Program, four distinguished professors of Soochow University, eight experts funded by talents plans of Jiangsu province, and seven excellent young scholars of Soochow University. All of full-time faculty members have PhD degrees from famous domestic or overseas universities. More than seventy percent of the faculty have overseas work experience. Famous scholars such asthemember of China Engineering Academy: Prof. Ruiyu Yin and Prof. Guozhi Zhou, are invited as Guest professors. The college has established the Jiangsu Metallurgical Engineering Practice Education Center, the Key Laboratory of Comprehensive Utilization of Metallurgical Resources in Suzhou City, and the Research Institute of High-Performance Structure Metals of Soochow University. 8 high-level school-enterprise cooperation platforms have been built with enterprises. 10 research institutes of unique research directions have been established. The area for teaching and research in the college exceeds 15,000 square meters and the total value of equipment exceeds 60 million RMB.
The college adheres to the concepts of Leading morality and cultivating people and Three Integrity Education, and constantly explores new talent training models that meet the requirements of new economic development, and the quality of talent training has been significantly improved. In recent years, 2 national projectsofeducational reform have been approved, and a number of educational reform projects of Jiangsu Province have been approved. Students have frequently obtained excellent achievements in scientific research and innovation, with a total of 25 national awards and 51 provincial and ministerial awards, including Gold Medal of Creating Youth national college students in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, Special Prize in the National TRIZ Cup in University Student Innovation Method Competition, Special Prize in Science and Technology Competition of the National Metallurgical University Students, Second Prize in the Challenge Cup of Jiangsu Province Competition, etc. The average admission rate exceeds 45% and the employment rate exceeds 95% of the undergraduates. Graduates have been highly praised by the employers and society. The college has become an influential training base for metallurgy and materials talents in the Yangtze River Delta region.
The college is guided by the country's major strategic needs and continuouslypromotes the coordinated and high-quality development of basic research, scientific and technological innovation and achievement transformation. In the past five years, full-time teachers have undertaken 45 national scientific research projects (including 3 key projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China) and 82 projects from provincegovernmentand enterprises, with a totalfinancialsupportof nearly 100 million RMB. Our teachers have published more than 500 high-level academic papers and applied for more than 200 invention patents. Average scientific research output ranks in the forefront of congeneric domestic universities. A number of distinctive scientific research achievements have been in a leading position in related industries and fields at home and abroad.
During the 14thFive-Year Plan period, the college will further focus on strengthening the construction of subject connotation, compacting the subject directions, intensifying the construction of faculty team and platform, continuously improving school conditions, speeding up the pace of internationalization and enhancing the subject level. Efforts are made to build a domestically first-class and internationally renowned college of high-level research, becoming a leading high-level talent training base and scientific research base in the Yangtze River Delta region.
