Abstract: Diamond impregnated drilling bits have been widely used in drilling deep, hard and abrasive rock formations, such as sandstone, granite in Vietnam, Khatatba in Egypt and basalt in North Sea. To achieve an acceptable rate of penetration, diamond impregnated drilling bits are usually run with turbo drilling unit (e.g. Neyfor turbo drill) to obtain a rotation speed of over 750 rpm. Current exploration of geo-thermal wells makes diamond impregnated bit an ideal tool due to its thermal stability at high temperatures. The performance of diamond impregnated drilling bits is highly dependent on the diamond strength, developing low melting point binder and therefore lowering the infiltration is critical in sustaining diamond strength. In this work, we applied a multi-component thermodynamics software package (i.e. Pandat 8.2™) to develop new low melting point Cu-based binders. A GB30 binder, with a melting point of over 150°F lower than the baseline GB4 (melting point of about 1670°F) and comparable mechanical properties after infiltrated with carbide, was identified and characterized.
