Graduate Repertoire Requirements

1. Piano Area

A. Piano Performance

Audition Requirements (memorization required):

  • A complete work by J.S. Bach that includes a fugue

  • A complete major sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven

  • A complete work from the 19th century

  • A complete work from the 20th or 21st centuries

  • A virtuosic étude

B. Collaborative Piano

Audition Requirements (memorization required for solo works):

  • One Prelude & Fugue from J.S. BachWell-tempered Clavier, Book 1 or 2.

  • A 19th or 20th century solo piano work

  • Any Beethoven Violin or Cello Sonata (first movement)

  • Franck Violin Sonata (4th movement) or any outer movement of a Brahms Violin, Viola or Cello Sonata

  • Schubert's "Ganymed" (A-flat major)

  • Debussy's "Green" fromAriettes Oubliées(A-flat)

C. Piano Pedagogy

Audition Requirements(memorization preferred, but not required)

  • A complete work by J.S. Bach that includes a fugue

  • A complete sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven

  • A complete work from the 19th century

  • A complete work from the 20th or 21st century

  • A Statement of purpose (2 pages)


2. String Area

A. Violin Performance

  • Two contrasting movements of an unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita

  • A complete concerto from the standard repertoire

  • Two contrasting movements of a Romantic or 20thcentury sonata

  • A virtuosic concert piece

B. Viola Performance

  • Two contrasting movements of a solo sonata or suite

  • Two contrasting movements of a concerto from the classic or romantic period or 20th century

  • Two contrasting movements of a sonata

  • One piece of the applicant's choice

  • Three orchestra excerpts

C. Cello Performance

  • One movement of a major work from Baroque or Classical period.

  • A major work – concerto or sonata - from the Romantic period.

  • A representative work from the 20th-21st century.


D. Double Bass Performance

  • Two contrasting movements of a concerto

  • Two contrasting movements of a sonata

  • A virtuoso piece or two movements of a suite by Bach

  • Three orchestra excerpts

3. Woodwind Area

A. Flute Performance

  • A concerto from the standard repertoire, with piano accompaniment

  • One major solo of the applicant's choice.

  • One unaccompanied 20th or 21st Century work

  • Orchestral Excerpts

b. Mendelssohn Scherzo from Midsummer Night's Dream

c. Stravinsky Petrushka

B. Clarinet Performance

  • A concerto from the standard repertoire, with piano accompaniment

  • One major solo of the applicant's choice.

4. Percussion Performance

  • Timpani: A solo work appropriate for an undergraduate senior recital

  • Snare drum: A solo orchestral work appropriate for an undergraduate senior recital AND a solo rudimental work from Wilcoxon, Freytag, or similar.

  • Marimba: A solo work written after 1990 appropriate for an undergraduate senior recital AND a movement from the Bach Cello Suites or Bach Violin Sonatas.
