Organic heterostructure nanowires with precisely defined compositions, architectures, and interfaces is of significant importance due to their promising applications in catalysis, plasmonic, optoelectronic and so on. However, owing to the difficulty in solving the lattice mismatch of distinct molecules, it remains a great challenge to large-scale construct organic heterostructures, as well as the limit their wide use in future applications. Compared with the large number of transistors produced by the top-down method in the field of electronics, organic heterostructure nanowire as promising blocks for construction of photonics chips, their large-scale synthesis by bottom-up method still requires a great synthetic effort. So that, the development of synthetic routes capable of simultaneously satisfying the needs of large-scale fabrication, and organic heterostructures with multi-function continues to require great ingenuity.

Recently, the research group of Prof. Liang-Sheng Liao, and Prof. Xue-Dong Wang collaborated with Prof. Min Zheng develops a concept of lattice-mismatch-free growth for hierarchical self-assembly of organic semiconductors (As shown in the figure below), which allowing for large-scale and controllable synthesis of organic heterostructure nanowires composed of the cocrystal and organic alloy based on the two structurally similar molecules. Actually, based on the concept of lattice-mismatch-free growth of organic heterostructure nanowires, they achieved a library of tens distinct organic heterostructure nanowires through some of the molecules currently available in laboratory. This lattice-mismatch-free growth process offers a large-scale synthetic pathway for bottom-up assembly of virtually any nanowire material into highly integrated and hierarchically organized nanodevices needed for a broad range of functional nanosystems.
