School of Mechanical and Electric Engineering (SMEE), originated from Department of Mechanical and Electric Engineering at Suzhou Institute of Silk Textile Technology in 1977, is one of the most powerful and active engineering departments with prominent discipline advantage at Soochow University. Research Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology(RIAMT) and Soochow University-Xiangcheng Robotics and Intelligent Equipment Research Institute was founded in 2014, 2015, respectively.
At present, SMEE has 3 second-level disciplines (Laser Manufacturing Engineering, Digital Textile and Equipment Technology, and Intelligent Robot Technology) for doctoral degree Programs, 2 first-level disciplines (Mechanical Engineering, Instrument Science)for master-degree Programs, and 2 second-level disciplines for master-degree Programs in Industrial Engineering and Control Theory & Engineering. Moreover, SMEE has undergraduate programs in 5 subjects covering Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Material Forming and Control Engineering. SMEE consists of 3 departments in terms of Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering Industrial Engineering Department and 1 college-level laboratory. Among them, Advanced Robotics Laboratory has earned Key Laboratory of Jiangsu province.
As for cultivating the students, SMEE persists in the principle of "Fundamental, Implementation and Innovation", focusing on students' innovative and engineering practical abilities, and has building a solid foundation and professional knowledge for students' future development. Two undergraduate teams won the grand prize and the first prize in the twelfth and thirteenth "Challenge Cup" National Undergraduate Extracurricular Science Competition, respectively. Additionally, undergraduate team in Medical Rehabilitation Robot won the title "Xiaoping science and technology innovation team for undergraduates" in 2014.
As a powerhouse of research and innovation, SMEE has undertaken 161 National and Provincial/Ministry government-sponsored research projects and 211 enterprise-sponsored research projects with a total research funding amounts up to 140 million CNY since 2010. SMEE has published nearly 700 SCI/EI papers, 23 books, and 595 authorized national patents. Recently, SMEE has strong and long-term links with the industrial sector such as Suzhou Boshi Robotic Company, Suzhou Tongxin Medical Instrument Company, Suzhou Tianhong laser company and so on, which has been playing an important role in regional economic development through speeding up the transformation of research achievements.
