The origin of the School of Public Health (SSPH) can be traced back to 1964, when it was founded as the Department of Radiation Medicine of Suzhou Medical College.
The School is comprised of the departments of Epidemiology and Statistics, Toxicology, Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Maternal Child and Adolescent Health; and the research centers for Health Research & Development and Genetic Epidemiology & Genomics. Moreover, the School has the Jiangsu Key Laboratory and Translational Medicine for Geriatric Disease, Institute of Healthy City (Suzhou), Suzhou Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation, Suzhou Public Platform for Testing & Evaluation of Export Chemicals, and Laboratory for New Drug Safety Evaluation and Research (Suzhou). The SSPH is superbly staffed with 56 faculty and staff members. Among of them, 51 members are full-time teachers. Currently, the school has 13 professors, 25 associate professors, 9 doctoral supervisors and 25 master supervisors. Additionally, the School has more than 10 adjunct professors from all over the world.
The School has established a postdoctoral research station for Public Health and Preventive Medicine and the school offers a doctorate (PhD) and master's degree in the first-level academic disciplines of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Furthermore, it offers a Master of Public Health (MPH) program and Bachelor of Preventive Medicine. Notably, Public Health and Preventive Medicine is a supporting subject for Jiangsu's preponderant discipline of special medicine and systems biology. Meanwhile, the SSPH is an affiliated institution headed by the chairman of the Committee of Chrono-biomedicine and Industrial Toxicology Committee of Jiangsu Society of Toxicology. Today, the School has about 610 students, including over 230 bachelor students, 130 master's and PhD candidates, and 250 MPH candidates.
In the past five years, over 60 WHO and national and provincial projects have been undertaken in the SSPH, including National Key Basic Research and Development Program ("973" Program); Hi-Tech Research and Development Program of China ("863" Program); National Key Technology R&D Program in Chinese 11th Five-year Plan; WHO cooperation projects; and key, general, and youth projects of China's National Natural Science Foundation. To date, the SSPH has published over 240 SCI papers. Among them, one paper was published in the top-ranking journal "JAMA" (Impact Factor: 29.9) and more than 10 papers were published on the First level of journals. In addition, one paper was selected as "The most influential international academic papers in China (Top 100)" and two papers were high cited papers in ESI. Based on these works, more than 20 patents have been authorized. Additionally, the school has won more than 10 awards at the national, provincial, or ministerial level, including one of the National Awards for Progress in Science and Technology.
The School also attaches great importance to international academic exchanges. Currently, we have established a stable collaborative relationship with world-famous universities and institutes, such as Harvard Medical School, Tulane University, Columbia University, The University of Alabama, the University of Kent and the University of Saskatchewan. Recently, the agreement of "Combined Bachelor of Preventive Medicine and Master of Public Health Program" ("4+2" program) has been signed between the SSPH and Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. By cooperating with local CDC, Health Supervision Institute and the Department of Health and Environment Protection, SSPH has set up more than ten off-campus Practice and Teaching Base for public health education. Additionally, the SSPH pays great attention to scientific and technological development and transformation. In the past decade, the school has carried out many service projects, such as irradiation and sterilization of medical supplies, drugs, and food; assessment of drug toxicity; evaluation of occupational safety and food safety; and detection of hazardous factors in the environment.
