报告摘要:
In this talk, we will describe the design, modeling, and measurement results of using metallic two-dimensional photonic crystals in a thermophotovotlaic (TPV) system to realize spectral control. In a high temperature TPV system, the fuel (combustion, solar or radioisotope) will heat the emitter to incadescence and a low bandgap thermophotovoltaic cell will be used to convert the radiation into electricity. One effective way to improve the efficiency of a TPV system is to use spectral control, so that high energy photons above the cell bandgap are emitted to produce more electrical power while low energy photons in far infrared are suppressed to reduce waste heat.
We will specially demonstrate a radioisotope prototype system by comparing the system performance using the metastructured photonic crystal and a flat metal emitter, and demonstrate the applicability of these devices in futuer extrasolar spacecrafts.
